When it comes to face treatments, now more than ever, people are opting for nonsurgical procedures over traditional facelift surgeries. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that since 2000 the number of minimally invasive cosmetic surgeries has risen by 180%. The reason people are choosing minimally invasive and noninvasive procedures—like Botox, Belotero, Dysport, and PRP therapy—is because 1) they don’t involve surgery, and 2) they make the anti-aging process appear more natural—i.e. patients’ faces don’t go from wrinkled to skin-tight overnight.
The experts at Trouvaille Med Spa are certified and experienced at performing many of these cutting-edge procedures. In the last post, we examined the wonders of KYBELLA—the miracle face treatment injection that permanently destroys the fat cells under the chin. In this post, we are going to look at another impactful, nonsurgical treatment: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Rejuvenation Therapy.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. In addition to white and red blood cells, our blood contains platelets. The role of platelets is to clot blood at the site of wounds and promote the healing and regeneration of cells. The idea behind PRP therapy is to harness the power of platelets by concentrating platelets and injecting them into a wounded or aging area, thereby accelerating the healing of the targeted area.
PRP Therapy for Aging Skin
Naturally, not all parts of the body age the same. The parts most exposed to the sun, free radicals, and other aging factors are typically the first to show signs of aging. PRP therapy makes it possible to target these specific areas and subtly reverse the signs of aging.
PRP therapy is a particularly good option for those looking for a noninvasive, natural face treatment. What makes this procedure different from other anti-aging injectables, like Botox, for example, is that PRP uses the patient’s own blood, which makes it the more natural and hypoallergenic option. After the blood has been separated and processed, the platelet-rich blood is injected into wrinkles, instantly augmenting volume and creating long-lasting collagen-regenerating effects.
PRP therapy has been known to reverse the common signs of aging, specifically by improving:
- Thin-skinned areas (under eyes and neck)
- Skin Tone
- Skin Texture
PRP Therapy for Hair Loss
Hair loss can be a hard thing to accept and treat. At Trouvaille Med Spa we perform PRP therapy as a proactive method for halting hair loss and promoting hair growth. The procedure begins with blood being drawn, run through a centrifuge, and then the PRP is separated. The rich concentration of platelets is then injected into your scalp to stimulate the cells of old or newly implanted hair follicles.
To prepare the scalp for treatment, topical anesthesia is applied, and a special micro needling roller is used to cause microtrauma to the lower layer of the scalp. There is very little pressure used to create these micro wounds, and as a result, pain is minimal. Once the concentrated PRP is injected, the spots where deliberate trauma was inflicted will experience growth and repair.
Are There Risks?
Because PRP therapy uses your own blood, there is no risk for an allergic reaction. However—as is the case with any injection—there is the risk of infection, swelling, and nerve damage. But in most cases, these side effects are rare.
